"Well the tour is nearing its end - from home to Singapore
thence on to places which the names alone will tell the story
- Calcutta, Penang, Hong Kong, Subic Bay; yes, from North to
South, East to West, the Quiberon has travelled.
Some say we ar th" Elite", others the "Untouchables" but to
us we are just he indispensable S & S. The writers, the victuallers,
the stars, the cooks and the stewards; here then are some of
the (in our opinion) rather humorous misadventures of the above
which we hope may bring a smile to those who remember.
First we have the rather young (Navy wise) cook "Lightning"
Whiting who wrote hme to inform his folks to expect a few "rabbits"
in the mail. Came the rather hasty reply: "Son, there are enough
rabbits in Australia already and besides, they may not get
into the country for they may be contaminated".
In Calcutta, the cooks came to the top once more when "Boots"
Soutar flatly refused to ride in the Gharri (the local form
of transport) because he considered the horse too old and proceeded
to run to town alongside the cart.
The same rating, accompanied by a steward namely "Lola" Lawley,
attended the Calcutta race course for the meeting and on getting
the 'nod' from the Australian jockey who was riding there,
politely nodded back. No doubt there were two very red faces
when the horse won at 20 to 1. Oh well, we live and learn won't
we!?
In Penang the LSAs found time to star when two of their number
decided to return on board a litle under the weather. Enoute
to the wharf, mounted in a Trishaw, one said to the other,
"Do you smell anything burning?", "Yes!" came the reply and
on looking down he found his arm cooking on the lantern of
the Trishaw!
By far the most popular steward on board would be our one
and only "Yogi" Lyons who has been Radio Quiberon's "Bob Rogers"
and in the process has become characteristic of the whole Ship's
Company. Well done "Yogi"!
Yes, many things have befallen our rather indispensable S
& S staff but the limited spoace available does not permit
us to travel more.
All eyes are now turned for home. From the whole of the S
& S we would like to convey to the Ship's Company our thanks,
and wish you all, happy sailing and fair weather.
