Sport

Rugby

The small ships participate in all sports and Rugby with QUIBERON has been one of the more popular selections.

During the commission we have met with mixed success but in the main have proved ourselves up to the general standard found in the small ships. The games played so far are as follows:
1st's played 14 - Results: 5 wins, 3 draws, 6 losses.
2nd's played 4 - Results: 3 wins, 1 loss.

The combined QUEENBOROUGH and QUIBERON have had 3 games for 1 win against the Calcutta Club 20-0 and losses against HMNZS TARANAKI 14-3 and Hong Kong 11-0.

The first game of the team was against QUICKMATCH at Mackay where the results of a 17-17 draw entertained the local Rugby League fans with some excellent football. As it was played as a curtain raiser to the local competition games, a large crowd attended.

Our last game has made us realise that more training is necessary and circuit training at sea is a must - HMNZS TARANAKI playing some of the finest football a ship's team can play won 50-5. Incidentally our try was the first by a ship's team against them.

At the start of the Far East Tour, to enable the selectors to pick the ship's team, Seamen beat the Dusties 9-0 and S & S and Comm combined to beat EM's 25-6. We have had no difficulty in raising two teams but with the hard grounds of Calcutta and Hong Kong we had quite a number on the injury list. It is to be hoped "Guns" 8 stitches in his forehead will leave him without scars.

Our thanks go to the PTI for his interest and help and also to the baggage men.

It is hoped that it won't be long before we are all fit again and can soon challenge for the Small Ship's Cup in Australia.

In Hong Kong we are holding the Club's "Do" and we all look forward to an excellent night, when no doubt, many previous games will be replayed and tactics discussed to great lengths (who will remember them in the morning?)

Basketball

From a very humble beginning in May, the Basketball team has com a long way. The first two matches were held in Brisbane and mackay but the team membership could not be called stable.

The real beginning came on our departure for the Strategic Reserve and a scratch game against MELVILLE followed by a few drinks showed we had the nucleus of a steady team. We were fortunate on our arrival in Singapore to be berthed in the Stores Basin which has a basketball court adjacent to it. After a weeks lunchtime practices, we were ready to challenge and had success by scoring wins over LINCOLN and QUEENBOROUGH. On being re-challenged we scored another two wins against the same teams.

Our next matches were played in Hong Kong. After an early win against WOODBRIDGE HAVEN we met two real basketball teams in the 2nd Battalion Gurkhas and 48th Battalion Gurkhas. The 2nd Batt raced all round us to win 50-13 but against the 48th we showed our best form to date but still lost 37-26. Before departing from Hong Kong we successfully met the re-challenge by WOODBRIDGE HAVEN.

After a break of a fortnight we chalked up three wins on consecutive days in Singapore namely HARLAND POINT, AUSTRALIAN MINESWEEPERS and KRANJI but again we fell foul of the Gurkhas being defeated 46-31.

in Singapore, before departing for Christmas in Hong Kong, a match against HMS TIGER resulted in a 30 all draw.

A great achievement was attained when, on arrival in Hong Kong, we defeated US Sub RASHER although the Americans had only to wait five days for their revenge when US RECLAIMER defeated us 30-16.

To save face after the Rugby we challenged HMNZS TARANAKI and were successful in winning 20-12. Soon after, a match against the Kai Tak Airport Five Service resulted in a 46-28 win.

We hope to play quite a few more matches before returning to Australia where we have designs on MELBOURNE.

The team is drawn from all parts of the ship, with:-
Seaman: L/S Denovan, AB Krist, AB Carroll, Ord Wright, Ord Landrigan;
Supply: Ck Soutar and Ck Malley
EM Whittaker, ERA Lewis
Wardroom: Lt Smith, Mid Taylor

Guest matches have been played by S/Lt Macdonald, Ord Leonard, Ord Glas and L/Ck Rigg

Water Polo

We arrived on the Far east Station on the 4th October 1962, when we accepted our first challenge, which came from the Singapore swimming Club on the 7th October. This being our first game with our newly formed team, which played well, but went down 5-1. On the following day the Tops division played the FX with the Tops emerging the winner 6-3.

With a few practice runs and one game under our belts we were keen to have a crack at our sister QUEENBOROUGH so on the 12th October, at the Terror Swimming pool, QUIBERON defeated QUEENBOROUGH 5-2. A few days later for the first time we played the RAF at Changi which are a crack team and we went under 12-3. After the game we joined them at their canteen for a few well earned drinks and personal friendships were made with a grand mob of fellows. The bus returned about midnight that night, on the way home needless to say who, but to mention a few, headed by Ces Bolton our piano banging and Ukulele plucking star, "Gorgrous" George our PTI, "Tex" Riters plus "Killer" Caine, well I better stop there - were having a "sing along" which I am sure could be heard from one end of the Island to the other.

On the 16th October we played "Cavalier" going down 9-1. The following month we had another crack at our old friends at Changi going down again 9-1. We again ventured to the canteen this time the new one which had just been completed. Our next game was played at Calcutta, this proved to be a rather hard game as the first part was played under their rules and tactics the remainder under ours, as it seems they play water polo completely different to us - the Calcutta Swimming club came out on top to the tune of 9-2.

On the return trip to Singapore we called in at Penang for two days. A combined team from Queenbee and Quib proved too powerful for a RAAF team at Butterworth on the second day of our stay winning 8-3. The team combined well, apart from a few lapses in marking their men and all played attacking polo. Lou Bogna from Queenbee was deadly with his throws at goal and collected four, Cess Bolton, "Gorgrous" George and "Strawberry" Curtius were the other scorers. Refreshments in the canteen afterwards were much appreciated by all.

Our team:
"Gorgrous" George Daniel, "Killer" Caine, "Strawberry" Curtius, "Andy" Anderson, Cess Bolton, "Dutchy" Glas, "Banjo" Paterson, "Mother" Whale, Jack Grodecki, "Slim" Whitby, "Kips" Camble, "Sully" O'Sullivan, "Bongo" Harrold, "Tex" Riters (Time Keeper)

EPOLOGUE
Our team have had their defeats as well as their victories but this trip has proved they are a fighting mob and will always go down fighting in a sportsmanlike manner.
"Well done all concerned"

Miscellaneous

Chances for Australian Rules Matches have been few but a keen interest is shown whenever names are required on the notice board. A few exhibition matches have been played in Singapore. The Royal Navy chappies looking on incredulously. Occasional matches have been available for the Hockey Team who have had a number of enjoyable games.

A combined "Quiberon-Queenborough" team defeated INS HOOGLY 7-0 which was a turn-up after seeing the Indians prowess in International Hockey.

Usually the Soccer Teams are a little too experienced and skillful for our enthusiastic but not so skilled team.

Cricket started off very late and only three matches have been played with unfortunately no success as yet, loosing to QUEENBOROUGH by 2 runs was a hard pill to swallow, but the fellows are out for the return match.

NS Corran, our wicket-keeper, has been a consistent scorer but unfortunately not a high one, An article on sport would be quite incomplete without mention of the Volley Ball efforts of S & S team, who withstood all challenges to remain undefeated. With the incredible line up including Beach Ball and H-Stroke, their victories still have one amazed.
